With warmer weather just around the corner, now is the perfect time to pick up swimming. And what better place to swim than an outdoor swimming pool?
As of the 21st of June 2019, the lovely outdoor lido at the New Bath Hotel & Spa, situated in Matlock Bath, is open once again. The ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Matlock David Hughes and the world famous swimmers Ross Davenport, who won 2 gold Common Wealth medals, and Ryan Taylor, who represented Britain at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
History really has repeated itself. When the lido opened on June 21, 1934, members of the British Olympic swimming team were the first to dip their toes in warm waters. There was even a sheaf of white heather thrown into the water for good luck, just as it was back in 1934.
When the New Bath Hotel closed in 2013, it looked like the end of the line for the lido, which had survived the Second World War and the massive decrease in outdoor pools during the 1960s and 1970s. The pool was been revitalised as part of a £3 million hotel refurbishment project.
The hotel manager Richard Devine couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved.
“The lido is a much-cherished part of the Matlock Bath and it’s fantastic to be able to secure its future for generations to come.”

Richard Devine stated “It is a fantastic asset for Peak District tourism with an amazing history.”
When undertaking refurbishments Richard has made sure to maintain the hotel’s original period features wherever possible to bring the hotel back to its former glory.
