Derbyshire business man bought a book for 1p and sold it for £2,000!Have you ever checked your bookshelf for first editions? Mark Cavoto, a businessman from Buxton, got a wonderful surprise when purchasing a 1998 first edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he realised it had been signed by J. K. Rowling herself.
Mark thanks his daughter for love of Harry Potter leading to him getting into the business of buying and selling Harry Potter books. His daughter Holly was even the one to discover his lucky purchase! She was busy helping him unpack his most recent set of books when…
“She stared at me and said, ‘Oh my God, it’s been signed by J K Rowling – and it’s a first impression’.
“I thought she was messing with me but it was true. It was signed ‘To Alexandra (again!) J. K. Rowling’ and was a 1998 hardback first edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second novel in the series.”
Last year Hansons Auctioneers sold two rare first editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which made a total of £57,040 in October.
Jim Spencer, books expert at Hansons, said: “We’ve had phenomenal success with Harry Potter books this year – so much so I’m still getting about 50 emails a day from people who think their copy may be valuable.”
So go on! Have a quick check of your bookshelf. You never know what you might find.
